"Towards Model Based Management of a Networked University"

What: International Conference on Network Universities and E-learning, MENU project.

Completed date: 01.02.2003

Co-author: Asbjørn Thomassen, NTNU.

Abstract: Selecting the most appropriate among the many courses offered in a networked university can be a cumbersome process for both the students and the institutions involved. We have developed techniques to construct a domain model describing the content of a course based on existing Web documents of the course. It will be argued that building models of courses in a networked university can improve the e-learning management processes.

Purpose and background: The paper is written for the International Conference on Network Universities and E-learning, Valencia, Spain (8-9 May, 2003), and is part of the MENU project.

"A Domain Model for an Adaptive Hypertext System based on HTML"

What: My master degree in Computer Science, completed October 2002.

Completed date: 29.10.2002

Abstract: The work concerns the identification of methods for how the computer can assist in the construction of a domain model for an adaptive hypertext system. Once a model is built for a domain, adaptive presentations can be tailored to fit a user. Our approach is to build these models from existing hypertext documents written in HTML, and the thesis explores methods for extracting knowledge about the content of each document.

"Essay on Intelligent User Interfaces and Adaptivity"

What: Essay written for the subject MNFIT379, NTNU.

Completed date: November 2001

Abstract: User interfaces have emerged from command lines to direct manipulation and now faces a new generation. From the user’s point of view, intelligent interfaces should provide adaptivity, context sensitivity and more assistance with the task at hand. To achieve these goals, the system needs to understand multimodal and possibly imprecise input, generate coordinated multimodal presentations and manage the interaction. The use of models to represent and reason about the user, domain, task, discourse and situation becomes important in building intelligent user interfaces.
